Federer Beats Sampras in MSG Exhibition

NEW YORK - The present got the better of the past. Current No. 1 Roger Federer beat former No. 1 Pete Sampras 6-3, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (6) in an exhibition match Monday night before a crowd of 19,690 at Madison Square Garden.

Federer is two away from Sampras' record of 14 career Grand Slam singles titles, a mark that exists only in black and white, written in a record book. For more than two hours, these two living, breathing greats of the game shared a court in black and white: The 26-year-old Federer wore the dark, ultra-modern outfit; the 36-year-old Sampras was decked out in the more conventional, country-club getup.

And, as one might expect, youth was served.
